Kinja'd!!!

I’ve come across an obsolete part for my 240D.

The exhaust is broken up into three segments.

Kinja'd!!!

Mine rotted where the middle section meets the rear.

Kinja'd!!!

For some reason I was optimistic that I would be able to remove the broken off piece in the rear section. So before removing anything, I ordered myself the middle section and figured I’d order the rear if needed. (it’s important to note the rear section was available at this time)

A week or so goes by with this gigantic box sitting in my house until I get the time to work on it.

Got it all off in short order.

Kinja'd!!!

Inspecting rear section: There is no way that is coming out of there.

Kinja'd!!!

Further inspection: Oh. Guess I’m ordering the rear section too.

Kinja'd!!!

OUT OF STOCK

“Damn.”

I check a few other places and a few show in stock. Place an order and...

Kinja'd!!!

“Sonnuva!”

I called Bosal to see if it is still being manufactured and was told it was discontinued in August and to try the dealer.

I sent an e-mail to the parts department of my nearest dealer after not getting through on the phone. About 15 minutes later I get a call and ignore it because I don’t recognize the number. The voicemail is from Karen in sales contacting me to schedule that test drive for that new Mercedes I’m interested in.

“ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ”

I never got a call or e-mail from the parts department, so I call back the next day and I’m told it’s obsolete and no existing stock left. :(

I don’t like ordering from ebay for the most part but had !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that (at the time) showed 5 available.

Place the order...

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is the last place I found that shows it in stock, but it doesn’t qualify for their free shipping. $180 for shipping seems a bit much when everywhere else was either free shipping or way cheaper. So I’ve emailed them checking on availability and if that shipping quote is accurate. Hopefully they have it and can do a bit better on that shipping price because I’d rather not go to one of the nearby exhaust shops.

Right now the car sits with just a lonely down pipe. I may have to see what it sounds like with no exhaust.

Worst case, any exhaust shop will be able to fabricate something suitable for you.

Doesn’t Mercedes classic stock/ have the ability to produce any part for any Mercedes?

First hit on German Ebay: Endschalldämpfer Bosal 278-013. €62.58. Free shipping. Multiple shops sell it for that price. Other brands for less than €50.

I know, I’m not helping.

About 20 years ago (wow), the muffler on the fintail fell apart (almost certainly not the original), and I needed to replace it. I didn’t even bother to look for stock parts, and aftermarket solution was created with ease and low cost. I bet a good muffler shop could fabricate something.

If I have to I might as well have them split into a dual exit behind each wheel.

ECS tuning’s shipping always pisses me off, but they usually have the best price so I reluctantly give them my money. I pay for the ground shipping and it still somehow takes my parts 4 days to make it to my house that’s a 4hr drive from their warehouse.

Move to Germany. Got it.

Maybe I should ask you to find me a one of the wagons, fill it with extra parts, and ship it over.

It’s too bad those mufflers are so large, otherwise I could just ship you one. Does it fit in a 120x60x60 cm box? If so, shipping would be €38 (<5 kg) or €55 (<10 kg) or €77 (<20 kg).

It’s time to move to the southwest. We have all the unrusted W123s you could ever want in Euro/USDM flavors and it’s getting harder and harder for me to say “no” to one. No smog if you buy a diesel model.

Guy from ECS just got back to me and says they can still get it and reduced the shipping, so I’m gonna try them. But thank you!
